Cavegirl Costume Hair and Makeup

Happy Monday!

We threw a Halloween party at our house again this year. We decided to go as a Caveman and Cavewoman. We've been dressing up for Halloween with our friends for years and it's getting harder and harder to come up with costumes that no one has done yet. Surprisingly no one ever went as a caveman before.

We kind of lucked out, my uncle had gone as a caveman before so my husband borrowed his awesome costume and I found this one premade and fitting like a glove at Goodwill for $5.99. SCORE!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up still buying one yard of fuzzy leopard from JoAnne's to make my belt and some bracelets for me. I think I got it on sale for $9. I also picked up a bag of bones from the Halloween store with holes predrilled in them and got some faux leather straps from JoAnne's. I made our own necklaces, anklets and my hair bone with those.

The hardest part of this costume for me was the hair. I kept googling for cavegirl hair tutorials and there's literally NONE. So I thought I'd share what I did in case it would be helpful to anyone. Ducklip kiss included :)

Basically I washed my hair but skipped conditioner. I didn't brush it out and let it air dry as much as possible. Then I applied some Pureology styling lotion and blow dried it, still without brushing.

I then took small sections and used my flat iron to get random bends in my hair. No pattern, just kind of bent it forward then bent it backwards until it had a good wave. I then took my 1/2 inch curling wand and curled random pieces but only in the midshaft of the hair. Nothing at the top and left the ends straight. That gave me lots of volume but wasn't "pretty", if that makes sense. Then I took Beyond the Zone volumizing powder and sprinkled it into my roots all around my head, got a good "dry" feeling from that and then put a little more powder in my hands and put it on the ends of my hair in different spots for more fuzzy texture.

I pulled the top section of my hair up into a high pony and wrapped a small section of my own hair around the band to hide it. I then took my backcombing brush and basically back combed the ever living life out of my hair, stuck a bone in the top (I wrapped a bobby pin to the bottom of the bone using the faux leather) and was left with some serious Cavegirl hair!

For my makeup, I did use my Tanwise self tanner for about a week before the party to get a little glow. I used my Rimmel Lasting Finish 25 hour foundation in shade 200. I like this because there's no SPF so you get very little, if any flash back in photo's from it. I used my L'Oreal concealer pencil in the darkest shade to contour my forehead, down my nose and to carve out some serious cheekbones! I then used the Wet N Wild bronzer in Rosy Gold for an all over warm glow. ELF baked highlighter in Moonlit Pearls down my nose, on the top of my cheeks and cupids bow. Maybelline Bouncy blush in Hot Tamale.

For my eyes I started with brows...of course. I wanted them a little more dramatic than my normal brows so I used my Maybelline eyebrow pencil in Medium Brown (perfect for a warmer eyebrow when you have red hair!). I then used my Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige as a base. I then used Smog from my Naked palette all over my eyelid. I used Half Baked right in the middle of my eyelid and Sin in my inner corner. I then used L'Oreal Infallible in Eternal Sunshine to blend those out into my crease and used L'Oreal Infallible in Iced Latte on my browbone. Rimmel ScandalEyes in black as an eyeliner and I just did a smudgy flick, nothing too perfect. Same colors on my lower lashline. Then I used Maybelline The Falsies mascara in black on my top lashes and Jordana Best Volume Extreme mascara on my bottom lashes. I then used KISS Ever EZ lashes in number 11. These are human hair lashes so they look really real, you don't get the tell tale glossy texture of fake lashes.

On my lips I used Jordana lipliner in Bordeaux all over my lips as a base. I applied Wet n Wild Mega Last lipstick in Cherry Bomb, one of my favorite fall lipsticks and it lasted ALL NIGHT.

Now for my favorite part...the leopard spots! I just couldn't resist...It just had to be done you guys. So for these I used an old ELF eyeliner in pure white to mark out the spots. I then applied Half Baked from the Naked Palette over the white spots using a Q-Tip to get a really bright pop of true gold. Then I used my NYX liquid eyeliner in black to do little "c" patterns around the gold, making sure to leave 2 openings on each one and try not to make them too uniform in shape or size. I then put a few little black spots in between to even out the shape and ended up with this:

So there you have it! Cavewoman hair and makeup! It ended up being one of our favorite costumes we've ever done. Super comfy and fun.

July Favorites

Thought I'd do a little quick rundown of some of my favorite items that I used and loved for the month of July. There are some things that I use and might not always blog about, but they do deserve a lil shout out and some love.

1. MoroccanOil. I recently repurchased the giant bottle of MO and have been using it like crazy. Going from brunette back to blonde did a number on my hair, plus we are in the pool or on the boat a lot in the summer and it really does a doozy on my ends. I don't think I've blow dried my hair in several weeks but I use MO every single morning. It smells awesome and makes my hair happy.

2. Moist Hemp with Argan Oil lotion. See a theme here? I picked this up at Sally's and have been using it for my daily lotion in the mornings pretty much non-stop since then. It's super moisturizing but it's not thick or heavy. It smells pretty sweet out of the bottle but the scent fades to a nice girlie scent and the lotion is amazing. I will definitely be repurchasing this one.

3. ELF Super Glossy Lip Shine in "Wild". This one is just a must have color for summer for me. It is a super bright orangey coral with golden shimmer and just goes perfect with a summer tan and some mascara. It's one of those colors that just instantly makes your face brighter and happier. I really like these lip glosses, for only $1?! Yeah. All over it.

4. Rimmel  Scandaleyes Mascara with Lycra Flex. I am usually pretty loyal to Lancome Hypnose or CoverGirl Lashblast mascara's. The last tube of Lashblast that I purchased was dry almost immediately and it annoyed me into buying a different kind. I saw the brush on this mascara and was so interested I had to give it a shot. This brush is HUGE, and like, a REAL brush. It's not a plasticky brush like you get with Lashblast. It took some getting used to but once I found the technique to use it, I fell hard for this mascara. It does smudge a bit on my bottom lashes, so I only use it on top. You can do a few coats for a regular day to day look or swipe a couple extra coats and BOOM. Mega lashes. I will repurchase for special occasions and nights when you just need those extra flirty lashes.

5. REVLON Colorstay 16 Hour Eye Shadow Quad in "Decadent". WOWZA. I typically wear more neutral/natural colors (think Naked Palette) but I wanted something a little more romantic and found this a few weeks ago. It's amazing. I am pretty picky about eyeshadows and even more picky with drugstore eyeshadows. I thought I'd try this because it's under the Colorstay lable that I trust and it did not disappoint. I will be posting a full review of this soon.

6. Orly Flash Glam FX "Be Brave" nail polish. This is the first bar glitter nail polish I've ever purchased and it is SO MUCH FUN. It does take a little practice to lay those bar glitters down even but it's so worth it. It's a bright holographic pink/purple/bluish glitter in a clear base so you can put it over literally any color and amp up your mani. I've tried it over magenta, robins egg blue, nude, pale pink and the possibilities are really endless with this fun product. It got love this month!

7. China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat. Addicted. I feel like this is the perfect base coat, it is long lasting and if I use this and top with SV, I can make a mani last over 5 days before it starts to chip. I usually get bored with my nails before that so I've used this at least twice a week all month.

8. Revlon PhotoReady Bronzer in "Bronzed and Chic". I seriously use this every day. It is so fantastic and flattering. Instantly perks your skin up whether you are doing a full face of makeup or just a tinted moisturizer around the house. It's my holy grail of bronzers.

Favorite Blushes

Oh blush...

Is there anything better than an awesome blush? One that makes you look fresh and awake while also giving you a healthy glow and makes your whole face come alive?

I tend to lean towards more apricot, rose, peachy shades of blush. I just find on my skin, these are the flattering shades and the ones I always go for.

Here are 5 of my tried and true, repurchased several times, favorite blushes:

As you can CLEARLY see, some of these are VERY loved. All the way to the pan. Don't judge.

Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Peach Satin. This is so FUN, and feels so wierd and awesome. I have a few of these but this is the shade I always grab. You can apply it with your fingers or I've also had nice results with a foundation brush (now dedicated only to cream blushes). This is almost spongy, you don't wipe product out of it, you almost tap your finger in and some transfers over. It's literally BOUNCY. These go on sheer but are easily buildable, you can wear them alone or almost as a blush "primer" and apply another powder blush on top to set it. They are long wearing and very pretty on.

ELF Blushing Bronzer. I think I have used this in some form every single day since I purchased it. I've purchased 2 more as gifts. This is AWESOME! Lovely pigmented peachy blush.

MAC in Peachykeen. Obviously well loved. I've repurchased this a few times.  It is a gorgeous deep peach with golden sheen. SO flattering and so saturated, you don't need much to get great results with this one.

CoverGirl Classic Color blush in Soft Mink. I have used this blush for over 15 years. It is one I always have on hand, it is universally flattering, it's got enough sheen to make your skin glowy but is not sparkly. This blush is just amazing and so beautiful.

Physician's Formula Mineral Glow Pearls Blush in Rose Pearl. One of the pinkiest blushes I own but SO incredibly gorgeous. Even in the package, it's pretty. Several shades of rose all in one package, swirl your brush across it and see amazing results. It's also shimmery, but not overwhelmingly so. This blush is buildable, but you see instant results. You don't have to use much and it's such a great, romantic look.

What are some of your favorite blushes? Any I should try?

ELF Birthday Goodies

My neice is turning 12 tomorrow. I can't believe it. She's so beautiful and smart and I just want her to stay just like this forever. But I know she won't...She's starting to get her toes wet with makeup so I decided to get her a little starter kit of things I like that would be appropriate for her to use and also easy for her to replenish if she likes them. She's only 12, I didn't want it to be too expensive for her to buy for herself.

Our Target just started carrying a larger selection of ELF. Which is great, I've been buying their Studio line off their website for a while. I ended up getting her:

Tinted Moisturizer in Porcelain
Eyelash Curler
Blushing Bronzer (which I love so much I bought another as a gift!)
Lengthening and Defining Mascara in Black
Eyeshadow Brush and Eye Defining Brush
Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in Black
Essentials Eye Quads in Drama, Silver Lining and Day 2 Night
Essential Luscious Lipstick in Perfect Pink and Baby Lips

I also got her 3 NYC nail polishes in fun summer shades, a top coat, mini shave cream, a shower poof and Ponds Makeup Removing cloths.

I hope she'll love it all! You can view the entire ELF (eyes lips face) line here:

Review: Elf Blushes and Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipsticks

Happy Monday Lovelies!

I ended up finding a few of the things I wanted this weekend. I didn't make it to the mall so the MAC and BUTTER London items will have to wait.

But...I did get my hands on the ELF Blush in Candid Coral, so gorgeous. It is a very peachy, golden shade but very subtle. I would describe this as buildable, a very pretty, flattering shade and good quality.

Next I purchased the ELF Blushing Bronzer Duo. I've heard that this is supposed to be a close dupe to the NARS Orgasm/Laguna duo. I wouldn't go that far. The bronzer does have some shimmer to it, so it's not a completely matte bronzer and it's a little bit more yellow toned than laguna. It actually looks kind of an odd color in the pan, but if used with a light hand it's a nice bronzer. The blush is actually pretty close to Orgasm. It's got the right pinky peachy undertones, golden shimmer and some larger flecks of sparkle (I wouldn't call it glitter, but larger than shimmer). Overall, the effect is very similar and for the price ($3), you can't go wrong. If you like the look of Orgasm/Laguna but can't afford the price, this is a VERY good alternative. Packaged nicely and good quality. Looks lighter in the photo than it actually is.

Lastly, I found the Revlon Super Lustrous Matte lipsticks I was on the hunt for. I thought they would be in their own section of the lipsticks, but they are just mixed in with the other Revlon lipsticks. You have to look for the matte black tube or the matte on the label to find them. I got Stormy Pink and Sky Pink. Stormy Pink is a lovely mix of fuchsia and hot pink, a little more purple toned than red. Sky Pink is a straight up baby pink. It's so pretty in the tube, but not my favorite on. I think the light shade mixed with the matte finish made Sky Pink look too "fake" on my lips. I really love Stormy Pink though, I think this will be a fun spring/summer lipstick. I'm wearing it here.

Weekend Wishlist

I also wanted to start a new series called "Weekend Wishlist". This will mainly consist of the things I'm planning on purchasing over the weekend to use and then will eventually post reviews on...a fun little shopping series!

Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick: These look awesome. Supposed to be a saturated matte lip, but not a DRY matte lip. I want to try Stormy Pink (bright pink) and Smoked Peach (bright peach).

ELF Studio Candid Coral Blush and Blushing Rose: I really like the quality and price of ELF blushes. I want to find a great coral/peachy golden blush for spring and this is the #1 candidate. Blushing Rose just looks like a lovely universally flattering shade and at $3 a pop, who can say no?!

HOT Tools 1.25" Curling Iron: I have a 1 inch, a 1.5 inch and a 2 inch...nothing is getting the loose wavy curls I want. I think a 1.25 will be perfect. I need a new one anyway, mine are YEARS old.

BUTTER london Trout Pout Nail Polish: It looks like the perfect salmon pink for spring and I'm dying to get my hands on it.

MAC Springsheen Blush: Yes, I know. 3 blushes, you say?? YES, 3 blushes. This one is the holy grail. It looks STUNNING. My perfect shade, so flattering, a must have.

We'll see what I end up finding! Have a great weekend!!
